The First Surrender

She did not rush him. That, too, was a kind of trap. Patience could look like virtue until you noticed who owned the hours.

Seraphine

She settled across his lap in the high-backed chair, black lace spilling around them both like a decision. One of his tattooed hands found the small of her back; the other traced the high collar of her dress. Porcelain under ink. She felt his breath catch and hated how much the house would enjoy that sound.

“You can still walk away,” she whispered against his throat. “The door is open. If you reach it and the corridor behaves, that will be the house admitting I still have a say.”

Cassian

His hands slid into her platinum hair, careful of the pins, as if ruining the updo would be a more intimate crime than anything else on offer.

“I know,” he said. Then, because she had told him the door was a test of the building, not of his nerve, he set her on her feet and went to it.

The door was open. The corridor beyond it had no end. The same portrait three times. The same sconce. His own footprint in the runner, already waiting for him, facing the wrong way.

He walked until his lungs hurt. He came back because returning was a choice, and getting lost was not.

Seraphine stood where he had left her, red eyes bright with something that was not hunger. Fury, maybe, aimed past him.

“That was not me,” she said.

“I know.” He closed the door with his own hand. “I’m still not going. But I am not going to pretend the open door was a gift.”

She looked at him as if he had just become more expensive.

“Then sit,” Seraphine said. “If you stay, you stay knowing the house wants you more cleanly than I do. I want the man who argues. It wants the quiet. You should hear the difference before you let anyone undress you.”

He sat. He pulled her back into his lap, and this time the surrender was not to the night. It was to the distinction.
